OVERVIEW
UPPER KEY STAGE TWO (age 9-11)
In Upper Key Stage 2, pupils are encouraged to continue to take more responsibility for their own learning and take pride in all they do. We help our children develop the skills for independent learning, reflection and self-assessment as they prepare for the move to Senior school. Children are given the chance to lead and manage groups, give presentations and use their initiative in completing independent projects to enhance their personal and social skills.
With a hybrid approach to teaching and learning, modern technology supports our teachers in promoting high standards of achievement through creativity, inquiry, collaboration and communication.
Technology is used in all areas of the curriculum and each child must provide their own electronic device. Pupils learn how to collaborate on projects, manipulate images, text and film for a variety of purposes and programming skills. E-safety is a highly important aspect of using technology which is embedded within all areas of the curriculum.
Each term starts with some kind of WOW, perhaps a trip, a visit from an expert or a problem that needs solving, introducing a theme that develops over a period of weeks allowing for experimentation, investigation and the acquisition of knowledge. The enquiry will finish with a celebration, perhaps a presentation, a landing day or an extended independent project.
In Year 5, the year begins going back in time looking at the Ancient Greek World before travelling through the Lost World of the Arctic and Antarctica and ending with the Future World of Space Travel. Year 6 explore Wars of the World, Unsolved Mysteries and conclude with a look at Sport Around the World.
In Years 5 and 6 we provide many opportunities for children to learn beyond the classroom and develop new skills through participation in productions, educational day visits, residential trips, themed days, enrichment and after school activities. Every child is encouraged to make the very best of their skills and abilities and flourish into confident young adults the Sherborne WAY.
