Overview of Lower Key Stage Two

OVERVIEW
LOWER KEY STAGE TWO (age 7-9)

At the beginning of Year 3, pupils move to the Hodder-Williams Building and it represents a big step forwards in their personal and academic development. It can also be a little daunting for the children so we spend time at the beginning of the year helping children settle into their new class, year group and building. We provide opportunities for children to get to know their new class-mates and teacher as well as laying the foundations for our high expectations: reminders about presentation (personal and written), politeness, respect and generally showing a positive attitude and growth mindset.

Throughout their time in Year 3, pupils will be immersed in our wonderful Sherborne Curriculum (The Sherborne WAY) which covers the National Curriculum for England, but also goes well beyond, meeting the needs of our pupils. They will cover key themes including Ancient Egypt, Africa and A Force of Nature.

Moving into Year 4, we start to build on the technology skills the pupils have developed in their first few years at Sherborne Qatar, and we begin to expect more independent, self-guided learning. This is all complimented through the use of different technologies and applications as we prepare pupils for Year 5 and Bring Your Own Device as well as working towards September 2022 when all Key Stage 2 pupils from Years 3 – 6 will bring their own device into school. Pupils are encouraged to take more risks with their learning as they prepare independent presentations and have more freedom over the style of writing they choose during our Talk for Writing units of work. All of this fits into the stimulating themes covered in Year 4: Into the Deep, I Am Warrior and Bright Spark where pupils will create their own ‘product’ after learning about different inventions.

Our newly developed Sherborne WAY (our thematic, rich curriculum) picks up momentum as pupils enter Year 4 where they begin to be assessed against criteria for the last three years of their Sherborne Prep journey. Pupils earn recognition for everything they do within and beyond the curriculum. It is Sherborne Qatar’s WAY of ensuring we have truly well-rounded individuals who have high aspirations and achieve their potential in every area of school life. Pupils must take responsibility for collating evidence showing that they have gone ‘above and beyond’ our expectations and they will keep a record of this. At the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will be awarded in Commemoration – a special celebration – to recognise their efforts and commitment to the Sherborne WAY.
